Story behind the work

This artwork explores the meeting of two visual languages - a quiet dialogue between Japanese and Western interpretations of waves.

Divided by a soft, organic vertical line, the composition brings together two surfaces that at first feel distinct, yet share a deeper connection. The line itself is not rigid; it gently shifts, like a shoreline where two bodies of water meet.

On the left, the rhythm is calm and structured. On the right, the movement is more fluid and expressive. Together, they create a balanced tension - not opposing forces, but complementary perspectives.

The piece reflects the idea that different cultures often express similar emotions through different forms. Beneath variation lies a shared sensitivity to nature, movement, and time.

The overall feeling is meditative and harmonious, like watching waves from different shores.

Period / Story

Vintage silk kimono textiles, primarily from the late Showa period (circa 1960–80s), recontextualized into a contemporary composition that bridges cultural aesthetics.

Meaning of colors and patterns

The soft neutral tones - ivory and muted pink - create a calm and refined atmosphere, allowing the patterns to speak quietly.

On the left, the seigaiha (青海波) pattern represents stylized waves arranged in repeating arcs. It is a traditional Japanese motif symbolizing continuity, peace, and the enduring flow of life.

On the right, the wave pattern is more fluid and naturalistic, reflecting a Western interpretation of water - less structured, more expressive, capturing movement in a freer way.

Together, these two wave languages express a universal connection to nature, showing how different cultures interpret the same element through distinct visual rhythms.

Characteristics of the fabric

Both sides of the artwork feature 地紋 (jimon) — woven patterns integrated directly into the silk.

These patterns are not immediately visible but emerge gradually as light moves across the surface, creating a subtle, layered depth.

The contrast between the precise repetition of seigaiha and the flowing Western wave pattern enhances the tactile and visual richness, while maintaining an overall sense of quiet unity.

Collectors Note

This piece carries a strong conceptual foundation while remaining visually calm and highly adaptable.

It is particularly meaningful for collectors interested in cross-cultural dialogue and the universality of patterns. The work invites closer viewing, revealing its details slowly over time.

As with all ikasu artworks, it is entirely one of a kind, composed of irreplaceable vintage textiles.

Decoration Advice

This artwork works beautifully in serene, thoughtfully designed interiors.

Ideal for living spaces, bedrooms, or offices, it pairs well with neutral palettes, natural materials, and minimalist settings.

Its vertical composition makes it especially suitable for narrower wall spaces. Soft, natural light will enhance the visibility of the woven patterns, allowing the artwork to evolve throughout the day.

Precaution

All artworks are made from authentic vintage and antique kimono textiles. Due to their age, minor signs of wear or variation may be present. These details are part of the textile’s authenticity and character.

Any noticeable features are documented in the artwork images where applicable.
