About this canvas

The deep red jacquard fabric used in this canvas showcases a traditional weaving craft from the early Taisho period, which began in the early 20th century. Jacquard weaving is known for its intricate and precise patterns created through a specialized weaving technique. The deep red hue and the craftsmanship of this fabric contribute to its timeless appeal.

Period/Story

This small canvas was repurposed from an early Taisho period (1910ies) naga-juban (under-kimono).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

This canvas has been crafted from an upcycled naga-juban, a long under-kimono, woven with beautiful flower patterns and dyed in a rich, deep red. In Japanese tradition, the color red encompasses a wide range of shades, and the deep red reoresented here is known as "shinku" (真紅), which translates to "true red." It has long been associated with the symbolism of warding off evil and inviting positive energies.

During the period in which this naga-juban and kimono lining were commonly dyed with this color, red was a prevalent choice. However, it's worth noting that during the Heian period (794-1185), red was a prohibited color for ordinary individuals to wear. This restriction was in place because red was reserved for sacred buildings and ceremonial vessels during that era.

Description of fabric characteristics

This fabric features an uncommon woven floral pattern, particularly uncommon for naga-juban fabric. Despite being dyed in red, the pattern is seen not due to color but rather due to shades of the flowers created through the play of light reflected from threads at various angles. This intricate technique highlights that the production of this fabric demands a high level of skill and craftsmanship.

Decoration Advice

The canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. You will need tacks or nails to hang it on the wall. Because it is light, you can hang it with two ordinary thumbtacks. You can also lean it against an easel. Perfect for redecorating your room, as a housewarming gift, as a present, or as a souvenir for your loved ones! The product will be carefully wrapped and sent, so it can be used as a gift on the go.
