About this canvas

Auspicious Mountains are depicted on this vintage obi canvas.

Period/Story

This canvas uses upcycled obi of late Showa period (probably around 1980ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

The use of red, white, and gold colors represents celebrations and special occasions. The bold composition of a series of mountains gives a modern art image to this vintage artpiece. The hills are captured in the sunset, lightened in deep red and gold.

Red mountains here are a reference to “red Fuji” - a special view of Mt. Fuji in red light. It is very rare view, and it is considered to be a very lucky sign to see it. In fengshui, they believe putting red decorations in eastern part of the room (where sunset light reaches it) brings good luck and business fortune, so it’s usual to decorate it with red Fuji or other mountains.

At first glance, it appears to be a simple mountain pattern here, but when you get closer, you can see that within the outline of the mountains, a pattern is expressed in a fine weave. Various traditional Japanese geometrical patterns, including repeating ocean waves, are all simple but give the obi a unique look.

Description of fabric characteristics

Nishijin silk weaving is one of the most high-level technics in Japan, based in Kyoto since 5th century.

The golden mountain gradation is soft and reminiscent of spring mountain hues, with soft yellow and peach colors used in the gradation.

Decoration Advice

The canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. You will need tacks or nails to hang it on the wall. Because it is light, you can hang it with two ordinary thumbtacks. The product will be carefully wrapped and sent, so it can be used as a gift on the go.
