About this canvas

This artwork captures the interplay of light and shadow resembling clouds by using the front and back sides of an obi woven with beige and gold thread in a Zuiun (auspicious clouds) pattern, showcasing the contrasting visual effects of the two sides.

Period / Story

The obi featured in this canvas was crafted and worn during the late Showa period (1960-80ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

This canvas is created from an upcycled Fukuro obi (type of obi with pattern on both face and reverse sides) where the rising clouds are depicted through the interplay of shadows in the weave.

Clouds continuously evolve, shifting in shape and color, and have long fascinated people as a sign of change and new beginnings.

Characteristics of the fabric

This obi showcases a festive color pattern of clouds woven with gold threads on a beige background. Depending on the angle and intensity of the light, the canvas exhibits varying expressions, just like the ever-changing clouds in the sky. These transformations range from rich, deep gold hues to a glistening gold.

Decoration Advice

Canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. Hanging on a wall requires hooks, tacks or nails. It can also be displayed propped up on an easel. Ideal for a room makeover, housewarming gift, present, or souvenir for a loved one.

Precaution

All the works are made from real kimonos, antiques and vintages. For this reason, the fabric may have traces of long-term use and minor fabric damages. In case there are any scratches or stains, we always add a photo of the area on the item page, so please check before purchasing.
