About this canvas
This black obi canvas showcases patterns symbolizing prayers for eternity.
The use of the traditional Jimon weaving technique gives it a unique appearance that varies depending on the lighting conditions.
This canvas is made from an upcycled obi from the late Showa period, likely dating from around the 1980s.
Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors
This obi showcases a design consisting of chrysanthemums, waves, and haze, all rendered in black.
The waves, continuously rising and falling without end, symbolize good fortune, representing concepts such as eternity, immortality, longevity, and birth.
The haze, with its formlessness, has been traditionally depicted in the shape of the letter "e" (エ). This haze pattern is connected with a sense of perspective and the passage of time. It is said to symbolize "eternity" in the sense that it appears and disappears with the passing of time.
Description of fabric characteristics
Nishijin silk weaving is a highly advanced technique originating in Kyoto, Japan, with a history dating back to the 5th century. What makes this technique distinctive is that it relies solely on variations in thread weaving to create intricate patterns, without the use of color.
The canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. You will need tacks or nails to hang it on the wall. Because it is light, you can hang it with two ordinary thumbtacks. You can also lean it against an easel. Perfect for redecorating your room, as a housewarming gift, as a present, or as a souvenir for your loved ones! The product will be carefully wrapped and sent, so it can be used as a gift on the go.
All the works are made from real kimonos, antiques and vintages. For this reason, the fabric may have traces of long-term use and minor fabric damages. - In case there are any scratches or stains, we always add a photo of the area on the item page, so please check before purchasing.
