Story behind the work

This artwork centers around the timeless symbol of the plum blossom (ume), a flower deeply rooted in Japanese cultural symbolism. Blooming at the end of winter while snow may still linger, the plum blossom represents resilience, quiet strength, and the promise of renewal.

At the heart of the composition lies a kinkoma-embroidered plum blossom taken from an antique furoshiki textile. The delicate gold couching embroidery radiates outward like a small universe, creating a calm yet powerful focal point. Surrounding the flower, geometric golden lines form an abstract constellation - a contemporary interpretation of traditional Japanese geometry and the interconnectedness of nature.

The contrast between the deep indigo background and the luminous gold lines evokes the image of a night sky where a single flower becomes a guiding star. Through this composition, the artwork reflects on the idea that beauty, endurance, and transformation often emerge quietly, yet carry profound meaning across time.

By re-creating an antique textile within a contemporary artistic structure, the piece allows the material’s historical voice to continue evolving while preserving its cultural spirit.

Period / Story

Antique silk furoshiki textile, Meiji period (late 19th century).

Furoshiki were traditional Japanese wrapping cloths used to carry and protect valuable items. Many were created with exceptional craftsmanship, featuring refined dyeing techniques and intricate embroidery. The plum blossom motif in this textile was originally intended to symbolize auspicious beginnings and perseverance.

Meaning of colors and patterns

The central plum blossom (ume) is one of the most revered motifs in Japanese aesthetics. Because it blooms earlier than other flowers, often during the coldest part of the year, it symbolizes resilience, perseverance, and the quiet arrival of spring.

The surrounding geometric structure evokes a sense of cosmic order. The golden lines can be interpreted as threads connecting the past and present, forming an abstract network reminiscent of sacred geometry. Their irregular yet harmonious arrangement suggests movement, growth, and unseen connections within nature.

The deep indigo ground creates a sense of depth and stillness, allowing the gold embroidery and lines to emerge like light against darkness. This dialogue between darkness and illumination reflects a broader philosophical theme found in Japanese aesthetics: that beauty often reveals itself most clearly through contrast and restraint.

Together, these elements form a visual meditation on endurance, renewal, and the invisible structures that connect human history with nature.

Characteristics of the fabric

The artwork is created from an antique silk furoshiki textile featuring kinkoma embroidery, a traditional Japanese technique in which gold thread is laid on the surface of the fabric and secured with tiny couching stitches. This method allows the gold thread to maintain its brilliance while creating refined and precise decorative motifs.

The plum blossom motif demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship typical of textiles from the Meiji period, when Japanese artisans combined traditional techniques with increasingly refined aesthetic sensibilities.

Over time, the silk develops a soft depth of color and texture that cannot be replicated by modern materials. These subtle variations contribute to the textile’s character and historical authenticity.

About the frame

The artwork is set within a circular wooden frame, a form symbolizing completeness, unity, and the cyclical nature of life. The round shape echoes the natural rhythm of seasons, particularly the annual return of the plum blossom each winter.

The natural wood frame provides warmth and balance, allowing the textile and golden elements to remain the central focus while reinforcing the harmony between material, history, and contemporary design.

Decoration Advice

The circular composition makes this artwork an elegant focal point for a variety of interiors. It can be displayed individually as a statement piece or combined with other textile artworks to create a curated wall composition.

The calm yet striking contrast of indigo and gold makes it especially suitable for modern interiors, hospitality spaces, cultural environments, meditation rooms, or refined residential settings where subtle symbolism and craftsmanship are appreciated.

Precaution

All artworks are made from authentic antique and vintage kimono textiles. Due to their historical nature, minor signs of age or previous use may be present. These traces are part of the textile’s story and authenticity.
