Story behind the work

This artwork explores the transformation of traditional kimono motifs into a new visual landscape. Embroidered pine tree patterns taken from antique kimono are reimagined as floating clouds - a poetic reinterpretation inspired by the traditional motif kasamatsu, where stylized pine branches resemble layered cloud formations.

In the composition, these cloud-like forms gather in the upper half of the circle, while delicate vertical lines of gold descend beneath them, suggesting falling rain. Elements of golden washi paper and gold leaf enhance this movement, creating the impression that light itself is dissolving into the atmosphere.

Between the drifting clouds and the rain, small circular forms appear - embroidery taken from other kimono textiles. These luminous dots evoke both raindrops and sun, suggesting the cyclical movement of nature: clouds forming, rain falling, and light returning.

Through this transformation, fragments of historical textiles become a new atmospheric scene - a suspended moment between sky and earth.

Period / Story

Vintage kimono textiles, including embroidered motifs from traditional Japanese garments (around 1950 - 60ies).

Meaning of colors and patterns

The pine tree (matsu) is one of the most significant symbols in Japanese visual culture. Known for its ability to remain green throughout winter, it represents longevity, resilience, and continuity. In classical textile design, pine motifs often appear stylized and layered, creating rhythmic shapes that can resemble clouds drifting across the sky.

In this artwork, these embroidered pine forms are intentionally reinterpreted as clouds, dissolving their original botanical identity into a more abstract natural phenomenon. This shift reflects the Japanese aesthetic tradition of visual metaphor, where natural elements often echo one another - clouds resemble mountains, waves resemble wind, and pine branches resemble mist.

Gold tones dominate the composition, symbolizing light, warmth, and spiritual clarity. The descending golden lines evoke rainfall, a powerful symbol of renewal and transformation. The small circular elements between cloud and rain suggest droplets suspended in light, capturing a fleeting moment within nature’s continuous cycle.

The composition invites contemplation of impermanence - the quiet beauty found in transient states between sky, water, and light.

Characteristics of the fabric

The artwork incorporates authentic embroidered motifs carefully extracted from antique kimono textiles. Traditional Japanese embroidery techniques are known for their precision and dimensionality, allowing threads to catch and reflect light in subtle ways.

The pine motifs used in this piece were originally part of decorative kimono compositions. By isolating and repositioning these elements, the work reveals the extraordinary craftsmanship embedded within historical garments while allowing the motifs to form an entirely new narrative.

Golden washi paper and gold leaf are applied to introduce additional texture and luminosity, bridging textile tradition with contemporary artistic composition.

About the frame

The piece is presented in a circular wooden frame, emphasizing the symbolism of the sky, the sun, and the cyclical movement of nature. The round format reinforces the atmospheric quality of the composition, creating the impression of looking into a contained horizon of clouds and falling light.

The natural wood frame complements the organic materials used within the artwork and supports the overall balance between tradition and modern interpretation.

Decoration Advice

With its luminous gold elements and calm atmospheric composition, this artwork works beautifully as a central piece in refined interiors. It pairs especially well with minimalist, Japandi, contemporary spaces where natural materials and subtle textures are emphasized.

Ideal for residential interiors, hospitality spaces, meditation areas, or curated gallery walls.
