Story behind the work

This artwork explores subtlety, atmosphere, and the quiet poetry of blue tones through a composition of vintage kimono textiles arranged in a structured, grid-like format.

Unlike more narrative-driven pieces, this work does not present a single focal point. Instead, it invites the viewer into a slow, contemplative experience - where each section reveals a different texture, pattern, or shade of blue, like fragments of sky, water, and air.

Soft geometric divisions create an architectural framework, reminiscent of Japanese screens or windows. Within this structure, delicate transitions unfold: from pale, almost translucent hues to deeper, more saturated tones. A small cluster of scattered motifs in the upper section introduces a fleeting, almost accidental gesture - like petals carried by wind or drops dissolving into space.

Rather than telling a defined story, the artwork captures a state of mind — calm, open, and expansive. It reflects the beauty of stillness and the richness that emerges when attention is given to nuance.

Period / Story

Vintage silk kimono textiles, primarily late Showa period (around 1960–80s), combined from multiple upcycled garments to create a unified tonal composition.

Meaning of colors and patterns

Blue in Japanese aesthetics is often associated with purity, calmness, and depth. It evokes elements of water, sky, and air - spaces that are both vast and intangible.

The repeating wave motif (青海波, seigaiha) in the upper section symbolizes continuity and peaceful flow, representing the enduring rhythm of life.

Other sections feature subtle 地紋 (jimon) patterns - woven designs that emerge only under shifting light - suggesting the idea that beauty is often hidden and revealed gradually.

The variation of textures and tones creates a quiet dialogue between structure and fluidity, control and natural movement.

Together, the composition becomes a meditation on stillness, where nothing dominates, yet everything contributes to a harmonious whole.

Characteristics of the fabric

The artwork is created from high-quality vintage silk kimono fabrics, selected for their tonal harmony and textural diversity.

Many of the textiles feature 地紋 (jimon), subtle woven patterns embedded directly into the fabric. These patterns are not immediately visible but appear as light moves across the surface, creating a sense of depth and quiet movement.

The silk reflects light softly, enhancing the layered effect of the composition and allowing each section to shift in presence depending on the viewing angle.

This restrained material richness is a hallmark of traditional Japanese textiles, where craftsmanship is often expressed through nuance rather than bold decoration.

Collectors Note

This piece represents a more minimal and contemplative direction within ikasu.

Rather than relying on strong motifs or contrasts, it focuses on tone, texture, and composition - qualities that resonate deeply in contemporary interiors and with collectors who appreciate subtlety.

Because it is composed of multiple antique textiles, each fragment carries its own history, yet together they form a cohesive and modern visual language.

Its quiet presence makes it particularly versatile, while its material authenticity ensures it remains a unique, unrepeatable work.

About the frame

The frame is made from antique kiritansu (桐箪笥) — traditional paulownia wood chests used for storing kimono.

By repurposing this material, the artwork maintains a continuous narrative: textiles once stored within the chest are now presented within it, reimagined. The kiri wood brings warmth, lightness, and historical depth, reinforcing the connection to Japanese craftsmanship and daily life.

Decoration Advice

This artwork is ideal for interiors that emphasize calmness, space, and refined simplicity.

It works beautifully in bedrooms, living spaces, and minimalist environments, as well as in hospitality settings such as boutique hotels or serene office spaces.

Because of its subtlety, it pairs well with natural materials like wood, linen, and stone. It can function as a quiet focal point or as part of a larger, curated wall.

Natural light enhances its textures and allows the composition to evolve throughout the day.

Precaution

All artworks are made from authentic vintage and antique kimono textiles. Due to their age, minor signs of wear or variation may be present. These details are part of the textile’s authenticity and character.

Any noticeable features are documented in the artwork images where applicable.
