Story Behind the Work

Pine ~ Longevity ~ is part of ikasu’s Japanese textile art collection, created from carefully selected vintage kimono fabrics with pine motif.

The composition features a single pine branch extending across a luminous gold background. Minimal yet expressive, the artwork captures a quiet moment found throughout Japanese art, architecture, and gardens - the elegance of a solitary branch suspended in space.

In Japanese culture, pine trees have long been associated with longevity, endurance, and unwavering vitality. Remaining green throughout the seasons, they symbolize resilience and continuity through changing times. For centuries, pine motifs have appeared on kimono, folding screens, ceramics, and temple decorations as auspicious symbols of a long and prosperous life.

The generous negative space surrounding the branch is equally important to the composition. Inspired by the Japanese concept of ma (間), it allows the viewer to experience stillness, balance, and contemplation. The pine seems to emerge from silence, creating a sense of calm that changes subtly with light and surrounding architecture.

Originally created as wearable textile, the vintage kimono fabric has been transformed into contemporary textile art, allowing the material and its history to continue their journey within modern living spaces.

Period

The artwork incorporates vintage kimono textile dating approximately from the 1960s–1980s.

Meaning of Patterns and Colors

The pine branch represents one of the most enduring symbols in Japanese visual culture.

Pine (Matsu)

Pine signifies:

  • Longevity
  • Endurance
  • Resilience
  • Prosperity
  • Continuity across generations

Because pine remains green throughout the year, it symbolizes strength that withstands adversity and the passage of time. It is often included in traditional New Year decorations as a wish for a long and fortunate life.

Gold Background

Gold has traditionally represented:

  • Light
  • Sacredness
  • Abundance
  • Refinement

Within this composition, the warm golden surface creates a sense of radiance without excess. Rather than dominating the image, it serves as an atmospheric field that highlights the delicate structure of the pine branch and enhances its quiet presence.

The contrast between the dark branch and luminous background creates a balance of strength and elegance, inviting contemplation rather than immediate attention.

About the Material

The fabric reveals subtle variations in texture, sheen, and woven structure that become visible as light moves across the surface. These qualities are unique to vintage silk textiles and cannot be replicated through modern weaving methods. This weaving technique is called "jimon".

Decoration Advice

Hanging on a wall requires picture rails, hooks, tacks, or nails. It can also be displayed propped on a shelf or easel.

The horizontal format works particularly well above sideboards, consoles, desks, beds, and entrance areas. Its calm palette and minimalist composition allow it to integrate naturally into contemporary, Japandi, minimalist, and luxury hospitality interiors.
