Story behind the work

This artwork explores harmony through contrast, using two distinct vintage kimono textiles united within a single composition. On the left, a soft ivory silk reveals a delicate snow 地紋 (jimon) pattern. On the right, a serene blue textile carries an elegant cloud 地紋 (jimon) motif. Together they evoke a quiet landscape where sky and snowfall meet.

The flowing curved line dividing the composition is highlighted with hand-applied gold leaf. Rather than acting as a boundary, this shimmering line symbolizes transition and connection - the moment where winter air meets the open sky. Its organic movement reflects the rhythm of nature and introduces a contemporary artistic gesture inspired by traditional Japanese decorative techniques.

Through the transformation of two antique kimono textiles, the artwork creates a dialogue between calmness and movement, lightness and depth. It invites the viewer to pause and observe the subtle beauty of patterns that reveal themselves gradually under changing light.

Period / Story

Vintage silk kimono textiles, late Showa period (around 1960-80ies).

Meaning of colors and patterns

The composition brings together two classical Japanese motifs that are deeply rooted in cultural symbolism.

The snow jimon pattern on the left evokes purity, stillness, and quiet winter landscapes. In Japanese aesthetics, snow often represents silence, renewal, and the beauty of fleeting moments.

The cloud jimon motif on the right symbolizes movement, change, and the vastness of the sky. Clouds are traditionally associated with good fortune, spiritual elevation, and the transient nature of life.

Placed side by side, snow and clouds create a poetic dialogue between earth and sky, stillness and motion. The soft ivory tone reflects calmness and simplicity, while the gentle blue suggests openness, clarity, and breath.

By bringing together two antique textiles within one artwork, the piece becomes a meditation on balance in nature and continuity in culture, where materials carrying history find a renewed presence in contemporary space.

Characteristics of the fabric

The artwork is created from high-quality vintage silk kimono fabrics known for their refined weaving techniques and luminous texture.

地紋 (jimon) is a subtle woven pattern embedded into the base fabric during the weaving process. Unlike printed or embroidered designs, jimon appears almost invisible at first glance and reveals itself gradually as light moves across the surface.

This delicate technique reflects a central principle of Japanese aesthetics: appreciation of understated beauty. The patterns are not meant to dominate the fabric but to quietly enrich it, rewarding attentive observation.

The silk used in kimono textiles is valued for its softness, strength, and its ability to reflect light in a gentle, shifting way, creating depth and movement even within minimalist compositions.

Collectors Note

This artwork embodies the essence of ikasu: giving historical textiles a new life through contemporary art. Each vintage kimono fabric carries decades of cultural memory, craftsmanship, and human touch.

Because authentic antique textiles are increasingly rare, every piece created from them is inherently limited and cannot be replicated once the original fabric is gone. Collectors value such works not only for their aesthetic qualities but also for their connection to Japanese textile heritage and sustainable artistic practice.

The combination of two distinct vintage patterns within one composition further emphasizes the uniqueness of the piece, making it a one-of-a-kind collectible artwork.

About the frame

The artwork is framed in natural kiri (桐) paulownia wood. Traditionally used in Japan for storing precious textiles and artworks, kiri wood is valued for its lightness, durability, and resistance to humidity.

Its warm natural tone complements the softness of the silk fabrics while reinforcing the connection to traditional Japanese craftsmanship.

Decoration Advice

The vertical composition and calm color palette make this artwork ideal for contemporary interiors that emphasize serenity and balance.

It works beautifully in living rooms, bedrooms, and entryways, as well as in hospitality environments such as hotels, galleries, and refined office spaces. The subtle textures and reflective silk surfaces interact with natural light, allowing the patterns to reveal themselves gradually throughout the day.

Displayed individually, the piece creates a quiet focal point. It can also be paired with other textile artworks to form a harmonious gallery wall.
