About this canvas

This canvas is an upcycled obi, a finely woven obi depicting auspicious mountains dyed red by the setting sun and glistening with gold.

Period / Story

The obi used for this canvas was made and used in the late Showa period.

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

The use of red, white, and gold represents celebrations and special occasions. The bold composition of the mountains gives this vintage artwork a modern art image.

The hills are illuminated by the sunset in deep reds and golds. The red mountain here is a reference to "Akafuji.

Red Fuji is a very rare sight, and seeing it is considered a very lucky sign. According to Feng Shui, placing a red decoration on the east side of a room (where the evening sun's rays reach) is considered good luck and leads to prosperous business, and Red Fuji and other mountains are commonly displayed.

At first glance, the pattern of the mountains looks simple, but when you get closer, you can see that within the outline of the mountains, the pattern is expressed in a fine weave.

Various water chestnut patterns such as Hishi Aomiwa, scale patterns, and Sankakushi patterns are all simple but traditional geometric patterns, giving the obi a unique look.

Characteristics of the fabric

Hakata-ori is a silk fabric produced in the Hakata district of Fukuoka Prefecture, Kyushu.

The pattern is expressed by forcefully beating thick weft yarns (yokoito), which are made by combining several thin yarns into a large number of warp yarns.

Designated as a national traditional handicraft in 1976, it is still very popular today.

The gradation of golden mountains expressed in such Hakata-ori is a soft gradation reminiscent of the hues of spring mountains, using metallic threads that glow in mauve and peach colors.
