About this canvas

I upcycled a kimono in blueish-grey color called "Fukagawa rat" with woven bamboo pattern and designed with gold embroidery to create a bamboo-themed set.

Period / Story

The kimono featured in this canvas was created and used during the late Showa period (around 1960-80ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

The kimono used in this artwork is a Fukagawa Nezumi (Fukagawa Rat) colored kimono adorned with a woven bamboo pattern.

Fukagawa-rat is a light bluish-greenish gray color that gained popularity during the late Edo period (1603-1868). It derives its name from its association with geiko who preferred simplicity over glamour.

Bamboo has held symbolic significance since ancient times due to its straight and robust growth, as well as the Chinese legend that a phoenix feeds on its shoots. Additionally, bamboo is associated with meanings such as "immortality," "longevity," and "strength" because it remains vibrant even during winter, and "innocence" due to its hollow stem.

Characteristics of the fabric

The fabric's lustrous weave enhances the visibility of the bamboo pattern when exposed to light.

Gold and silver threads have been embroidered on the hem, shoulders, and sleeves in a three-dimensional pattern, further enhancing the beauty of the bamboo design.

The original kimono was likely tailored for formal occasions, possibly as a kimono for official visits.

The addition of gold and silver threads not only enriches the intricate and delicate details of the pattern but also introduces an element of glamour to the overall design.

Decoration Advice

Canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. Hanging on a wall requires hooks, tacks or nails. It can also be displayed propped up on an easel. Ideal for a room makeover, housewarming gift, present, or souvenir for a loved one.

Precaution

All the works are made from real kimonos, antiques and vintages. For this reason, the fabric may have traces of long-term use and minor fabric damages. In case there are any scratches or stains, we always add a photo of the area on the item page, so please check before purchasing. Regarding precaution, cancellation and refund policy, please refer to the refund policy in the footer section of the site for information.
