Story behind the work

This artwork began with a vintage obi silk textile, dyed with a mesmerizing indigo shibori (絞り) pattern that naturally forms a spiral.

When I first saw this texture and movement, it instantly reminded me of an ammonite fossil - a symbol of deep time and natural geometry. To emphasize this connection, I hand-painted intricate silver swirls using acrylic paint and added textured silver leaf along the edge. This intervention became a bridge between the ancient craftsmanship of the Japanese weaver and a timeless symbol of evolution.

In nature, the spiral of the ammonite represents the continuous cycle of life, growth, and eternity. By marrying this ancient motif with traditional Japanese textile art, the piece explores how beauty and energy endure across time. Having lived between cultures, I find comfort in these universal patterns that connect our shared human history to the natural world. The indigo folds of the shibori and the brilliant silver leaf become two visual elements singing the same song: continuity, resilience, and the infinite rhythm of life.

Period / Story

Showa era to Heisei era (mid-to-late 20th century) vintage obi silk textile featuring traditional tie-dye (shibori) craftsmanship.

Meaning of colors and patterns

Ammonite / Spiral

A universal symbol of growth, evolution, and eternity. The spiral mimics the golden ratio found throughout nature, representing the journey of life and the continuity of time.

Deep Indigo Blue

Evokes the depths of the ocean and the expanse of the night sky - spaces where time stands still and ancient histories are preserved.

Characteristics of the fabric

The artwork utilizes vintage obi silk, a highly prized and structurally dense fabric traditionally used for formal Japanese sashes. This specific textile features a masterful application of shibori (tie-dyeing), which creates a unique, tactile dimensionality. The intensive labor required to bind, dye, and release the silk transforms the material into a living sculpture, providing a rich, textured canvas for the artist’s contemporary silver accents.

The traditional shibori technique creates three-dimensional peaks and valleys. In this piece, the blue and white textured patterns evoke the organic architecture of a ancient fossil or the rhythmic motion of ocean waves.

About the frame

The artwork is presented in a round frame that echoes the perfect geometry of the spiral and the ammonite itself. The clean, minimalist frame focuses all attention on the rich textures of the silk and the reflective radiance of the silver leaf, seamlessly bridging traditional textile art with contemporary interior aesthetics.
