Story behind the work

Snow in Moonlight is part of ikasu’s geometric textile art series, created from vintage Japanese kimono textiles.

Using fragments of historic fabrics arranged into a restrained geometric composition, the artwork explores the quiet relationship between light, emptiness, and stillness within Japanese aesthetics. The circular form appears like a distant winter moon suspended in silence, while the delicate horizontal line evokes the calm horizon of snow covered landscapes at night.

The composition is inspired by fleeting moments often celebrated in Japanese culture - the soft reflection of moonlight on snow, the atmosphere of silence after snowfall, and the beauty found in simplicity and restraint. Gold toned details reminiscent of kintsugi subtly connect the elements, reflecting the Japanese philosophy of transformation, continuity, and renewal.

While the original kimono once existed as wearable objects carrying memories of another era, they are reimagined here as contemporary textile art, allowing the materials to continue their story in modern interiors and contemplative spaces.

Another artwork from this series has been installed in a hotel in Kyoto, where the calm geometric composition complements contemporary Japanese architecture and warm ambient light.

Period

The artwork uses vintage kimono textile, around 1960ies.

Meaning of patterns and colors

The palette of ivory and warm gold reflects traditional Japanese aesthetics rooted in harmony, subtlety, and natural elegance.

Gold has long symbolized light, sacredness, and refinement in Japanese art and architecture, while neutral tones create a sense of calm, warmth, and timelessness. The simplicity of the composition allows space and texture to become part of the visual experience, encouraging slow observation.

The circular form suggests completeness, stillness, and continuity, while the horizontal line introduces balance and gentle movement across the composition. Rather than relying on figurative imagery, the work communicates through proportion, material, texture, and atmosphere, subtly changing depending on surrounding light and the interior space where it is displayed.

In Japanese culture, the moon has long been associated with quiet beauty, reflection, and the passing nature of time. Unlike the sun’s direct presence, moonlight is often appreciated for its softness and subtlety - revealing rather than overpowering.

The moon also carries strong connections to contemplation and seasonal awareness in Japanese aesthetics. Traditional practices such as tsukimi 月見 (moon viewing) celebrate moments of stillness, silence, and appreciation of transient beauty in nature.

In art and poetry, the moon frequently symbolizes distance, memory, longing, and spiritual calm. Its changing appearance reflects the Japanese sensitivity to impermanence and the beauty found within fleeting moments.

About the Material

The textile used in this artwork features the traditional Japanese jimon 地紋 technique — a subtle woven pattern embedded into the fabric itself rather than printed on the surface. Historically used in refined kimono and obi textiles, jimon creates delicate variations in texture that softly emerge as light moves across the material.

In Snow in Moonlight, the woven surface reveals faint shimmering textures reminiscent of snow crystals, mist, or scattered moonlight reflected on winter landscapes. Depending on the angle of light and the viewer’s perspective, the fabric appears to shift between softness and luminosity, creating a quiet sense of depth within the minimal composition.

This understated craftsmanship reflects a uniquely Japanese aesthetic sensibility: beauty that reveals itself gradually through proximity, silence, and attention. Rather than dominating the artwork, the textile invites contemplation, creating a calm dialogue between material, light, and space.

Decoration Advice

Hanging on a wall requires picture rails, hooks, tacks or nails. It can also be displayed propped up on an easel. Ideal for a room makeover, housewarming gift, present, or souvenir for a loved one.
