Story behind the work

This artwork explores the dynamic interplay between tradition and vitality through a composition of vintage kimono textiles arranged in an expressive, asymmetrical structure. Different patterns and tones intersect, creating a sense of movement - as if multiple layers of time and nature are unfolding within a single frame.

At the center, a vivid red chrysanthemum motif radiates outward in flowing lines, becoming the energetic core of the piece. Surrounding it, softer elements - delicate botanical forms, geometric wave patterns, and muted neutral tones - create a calm counterbalance. Together, they evoke a landscape where life quietly expands beneath a composed surface.

The angled divisions of the composition guide the eye across the artwork, suggesting motion and transformation rather than stillness. Each segment feels independent, yet deeply connected, forming a visual rhythm that reflects the coexistence of structure and organic growth.

Through this work, traditional motifs are recontextualized into a contemporary expression of energy, elegance, and continuous renewal.

Period / Story

Vintage silk kimono textiles, late Showa period (around 1960–80s).

Meaning of colors and patterns

The artwork brings together several classical Japanese motifs, each carrying its own symbolic meaning.

The central chrysanthemum (菊, kiku) represents longevity, vitality, and noble beauty. Its layered petals, rendered in flowing lines, suggest expansion and life force.

The wave motif (青海波, seigaiha) symbolizes continuity, calm seas, and the enduring flow of life. Its repeating arcs create a sense of stability and quiet rhythm.

The botanical elements in the upper section introduce a feeling of growth and seasonality, while the neutral tones provide balance and space for reflection.

The red color at the center conveys energy, warmth, and presence, while the surrounding soft greys and ivories create contrast, allowing the composition to breathe.

Together, these elements form a dialogue between stillness and movement, tradition and reinterpretation - a visual expression of life unfolding within structure.

Characteristics of the fabric

The artwork is created from high-quality vintage silk kimono fabrics known for their refined weaving techniques and luminous texture.

Some patterns are woven as 地紋 (jimon), subtle designs embedded into the fabric itself, while others are expressed through dyeing and surface techniques. This layering of methods adds depth and richness to the composition.

The silk reflects light softly, enhancing the movement of the patterns and allowing details to reveal themselves gradually depending on the viewing angle.

This interplay of material and light is a defining characteristic of traditional kimono textiles, where beauty often emerges through subtlety rather than bold contrast.

Collectors Note

This artwork embodies the essence of ikasu: giving new life to historical textiles through contemporary composition.

Each fabric fragment carries its own history, and their combination within a single piece creates a layered narrative that cannot be replicated. As vintage kimono textiles become increasingly rare, such works hold both artistic and cultural value.

The contrast between the energetic chrysanthemum and the calm surrounding elements makes this piece particularly engaging, offering both visual impact and contemplative depth.

It is a one-of-a-kind artwork that bridges past and present, tradition and modern space.

About the frame

The artwork is framed in natural kiri (桐) paulownia wood. Traditionally used in Japan for storing valuable textiles, kiri wood is lightweight, durable, and resistant to humidity.

Its understated natural tone enhances the colors of the artwork without overpowering them, maintaining a sense of balance and refinement.

Decoration Advice

The bold central motif combined with a balanced composition makes this artwork suitable as a focal point in a variety of interiors.

It works particularly well in living rooms, entryways, and creative spaces where a sense of energy and elegance is desired. The contrast between vivid red and neutral tones allows it to complement both minimalist and more expressive interiors.

Natural light will enhance the texture of the silk and the depth of the patterns, allowing the artwork to subtly transform throughout the day.
