Story behind the work

This artwork brings together two vintage kuro-tomesode kimono, each originally created to celebrate life's most important occasions.

One kimono depicts elegant cranes standing among softly glowing clouds. The other features evergreen pine trees and delicate peacock feathers. Although they once belonged to different garments and different lives, I saw them as parts of the same landscape waiting to be reunited.

As I composed the four panels, I was drawn to the quiet balance between the motifs. The cranes bring movement and grace, while the pine trees provide stability and permanence. The peacock feathers appear almost like a gentle echo, adding a subtle rhythm to the composition.

Together they create a scene that feels suspended in time - peaceful, spacious, and timeless.

By combining fragments from two separate kimono, I wanted to preserve not only the extraordinary craftsmanship of hand-painted yuzen dyeing, but also to give these textiles a new life beyond the wardrobe. Rather than remaining hidden away in storage, they continue their journey as contemporary art while carrying the stories of the artisans who created them decades ago.

Period / Story

Showa period to early Heisei period (mid-20th century to late 20th century) vintage kuro-tomesode textiles featuring hand-painted yuzen decoration.

Meaning of colors and patterns

Cranes (鶴 Tsuru)
One of Japan's most celebrated auspicious motifs, cranes symbolize longevity, fidelity, peace, and good fortune. They are traditionally associated with lifelong partnerships and joyful celebrations.

Pine Trees (松 Matsu)
Evergreen throughout the seasons, pine represents resilience, endurance, and continuity. It is one of the "Three Friends of Winter" in East Asian culture and is believed to bring protection and prosperity.

Peacock Feathers
Peacocks symbolize dignity, beauty, compassion, and spiritual awakening. Their feathers are admired for their elegance and are believed to attract positive energy while warding off misfortune.

Black Background
The deep black silk of the kuro-tomesode creates a sense of depth and stillness, allowing the hand-painted motifs to emerge like memories illuminated by light.

Characteristics of the fabric

Kuro-tomesode 黒留袖 is the highest-ranking formal kimono worn by married women for ceremonial occasions, such as weddings. Traditionally crafted from fine silk, these garments feature elaborate decoration only below the waist, where landscapes, seasonal motifs, and auspicious symbols unfold through the masterful technique of hand-painted yuzen 友禅.

The textiles used in this artwork showcase the exceptional artistry of yuzen dyeing, celebrated for its painterly detail, subtle color gradations, and refined elegance. Each motif is individually painted by hand, making every kimono a unique expression of Japanese craftsmanship.

Decoration Advice

Designed as a four-panel composition, the artwork creates a calm visual rhythm across the wall. The generous black space surrounding the motifs allows the eye to rest, making it particularly suitable for minimalist interiors, boutique hotels, galleries, and contemporary living spaces. The panels may be displayed closely together or with narrow spacing to emphasize the flow of the landscape.
