About this canvas

This is a modern work in which the foil é haze pattern looks like clouds over the moon.

Period / Story

The obi used in this canvas was made and used in the late Showa period.

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

This obi is decorated with gold and silver foil in an "ekasumi" pattern.

The "ehkasumi" pattern is a design of the letter "e" in the haze pattern, and is often seen with a pattern of flowers and other auspicious motifs inside.

Haze patterns are based on the motif of "haze," which has no form, and are expressed by layering several straight lines horizontally, a technique that has been widely used in paintings since ancient times.

Haze patterns are also used to express perspective and changes in time, and are said to represent "eternity" in the sense that they appear and disappear.

This is an upcycled obi with a simple yet modern impression of a haze pattern and the deep look of gold and silver foil.

Characteristics of the fabric

The foil is thinly stretched gold or silver foil, coated with lacquer and applied to a thin sheet of Japanese paper matching the width of the obi, and then cut into thin strips less than one millimeter wide.

The technique of weaving this foil is called "pull foil. Ultra-thin foil is woven into the weft of Nishijin brocade and Karaori brocade.

By weaving the foil into the ground weave, a subdued gold or silver beauty is created without becoming too gilded.
