Period/Story

Obi used for this canvas was made and used in late Showa period (probably 50ies to 80ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

There are various types of wave patterns. Waves that come and go are used as auspicious symbols of eternity, immortality, longevity, birth, and so on. Among this variety of wave pattern, big wave like this one is also called "Tatsu-nami" or "Ara-nami" and was popular in the Edo period (1603-1867). The waves come repeatedly, changing the shape of the rocks and the shape of the land, so this pattern is said to express a strong will and the spirit of perseverance to challenge again and again without giving up. It is also said that strong waves can fight with demons.

Color called Shu-iro refers to a bright red color with a yellowish tinge, close to vermilion in western culture. In the past, the best color of red paint was called "shu". Vermilion is also considered the color of intelligence, items of this color are often found in ancient tombs of governors. In addition to its historical significance, the color vermilion itself has many other meanings, such as warm fire, shining sun, protection against evil and evil forces, prevention of misfortune, prosperity of descendants, and rich harvest.

Description of fabric characteristics

Powerful waves are depicted only by the three-dimensional  embroidery. While the bold wave pattern is eye-catching, the light caged in the fine stitches of the embroidery gives it an expression of depth. The minimalist composition, with colors and patterns expressed the bare minimum, gives a modern impression and at the same time makes the embroidery technique more vivid.

Decoration Advice

The canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. You will need tacks or nails to hang it on the wall. Because it is light, you can hang it with two ordinary thumbtacks.
