About this canvas

The upper canvas has been repurposed from a long under-kimono, while the middle and lower canvases originate from kimono fabrics.

All three canvases feature the same captivating ocean wave pattern. However, the upper canvas stands out with its unique depiction of clouds, portraying the sequence from the sky above, the sunlit ocean during sunset in the middle, and the tranquil waves extending outward on the bottom canvas.

Period / Story

The kimono and under-kimono fabrics used in this canvas set were crafted during the late Showa period (1960-80ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

The kimono used here was adorned with a prominent ocean wave pattern, and its shoulders, hem, and sleeves are enriched with a delicate ocean wave pattern dyed in beaten gold.

The Seigaiha wave pattern is regarded as a symbol of good fortune, with its endless waves signifying wishes for enduring happiness and a serene life for all.

Clouds, with their ever-changing forms and colors, have historically intrigued people as a sign of future big events or omens.

Characteristics of the fabric

Seigaiha, or the ocean wave pattern, elegantly decorates the canvas on a lustrous ivory background. While this kimono could be worn for formal occasions, it stands out due to its distinctive feature: it is dyed in beaten gold without any easily recognizable motifs, setting it apart in terms of its unique design and elegance.

Decoration Advice

Canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. Hanging on a wall requires hooks, tacks or nails. It can also be displayed propped up on an easel. Ideal for a room makeover, housewarming gift, present, or souvenir for a loved one.

Precaution
