About this canvas

This artwork skillfully captures the interplay of light and shadow in clouds by incorporating both the front and back sides of an obi woven with traditional clouds pattern made of gold threads on a vermilion background. The distinction between how the front and back sides appear contributes to the nuanced portrayal of clouds and their shifting patterns.

Period / Story

The obi used for this canvas was crafted during the late Showa period (1960-80ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

Fukuro obi used here skillfully portrays the clouds with their shadows through its skillful weave. Clouds, which continually change in shape and color, have long held people's attention as symbols that predict big events or omens of what's to come.

The vermilion color, commonly found in antique obi, is a vibrant shade of red with a hint of yellow. In the past, the finest red pigment was referred to as "vermilion."

Vermilion is also regarded as a color symbolizing authority.

Beyond its historical significance, vermilion carries various other meanings, including the warmth of fire, the radiance of the sun, protection against evil forces, warding off misfortune, and fertility.

Characteristics of the fabric

This obi has a celebratory color pattern with clouds intricately woven in gold threads against a vermilion background. Depending on how the light interacts with it, the canvas shows different shades just like the shifting clouds in the sky. It can transition from a rich shade of vermilion to a glistening gold hue set against a vibrant vermilion backdrop.

Decoration Advice

Canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. Hanging on a wall requires hooks, tacks or nails. It can also be displayed propped up on an easel. Ideal for a room makeover, housewarming gift, present, or souvenir for a loved one.
