About this canvas

An oriental pattern featuring a flowing river with a phoenix tale gracefully hovering above it will infuse your interior with a touch of exotic ambiance.

Period/Story

The kimono used for this canvas was crafted and used during the late Showa period, likely dating from the 1960s to the 1980s.

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

This canvas features an oriental "sarasa" pattern in sophisticated shades of vermilion, gray, and black, set against a black background, creating the illusion of a flowing river. Gracefully hovering above the river is the tail of a phoenix as it soars away from the waterside.

The "sarasa" pattern, originating from India, Java, Persia, and other Asian regions, was introduced to Japan during the Kamakura and Edo periods, starting in the 12th century. It encompasses exotic motifs such as people, birds, animals, flowers, and more.

The phoenix has held a revered status as a legendary bird of good fortune in Chinese culture, symbolizing peace and happiness. Phoenix eggs are believed to possess miraculous properties for longevity, and the phoenix itself carries the meanings of "longevity" and "rejuvenation." It was introduced to Japan during the Nara period (710-794) and is often encountered in historical treasures like the Shosoin Repository.

Description of fabric characteristics
