About this canvas

This delicate canvas features a graceful composition of cherry blossoms gently scattered across stylized wave patterns. The intricate waves are depicted using the shibori dyeing technique—an elegant dots motif that gives rhythm and texture to the dark fabric.

The soft pinks and blues of the blossoms create a serene contrast against the deep black background, capturing a fleeting moment of spring’s quiet beauty.

Period / Story

The fabric used for this canvas comes from a vintage kimono made during the late Showa period (1960s–1980s). Although it has spent many years tucked away in a closet, its condition remains excellent, and its craftsmanship speaks to the enduring elegance of traditional Japanese textile design.

Meaning of patterns and colors

The cherry blossom (sakura) is one of Japan’s most beloved motifs, symbolizing renewal, hope, and the ephemeral beauty of life. Their soft, fleeting petals remind us to appreciate each moment and embrace change with grace.

The stylized wave forms express the powerful yet graceful flow of nature—an eternal rhythm of rise and return. When combined, the waves and blossoms convey a sense of both movement and stillness, capturing the quiet harmony found in Japanese aesthetics.

The black base color, often reserved for formal kimono, enhances the refined contrast and allows the subtle colors of the flowers to shine. It also adds a timeless, modern touch that makes this piece suitable for any interior.

Description of fabric characteristics

This canvas is crafted from a kimono featuring shibori, a traditional Japanese tie-dye technique that requires exceptional skill and patience. Each tiny dot and curve seen in the wave patterns was meticulously hand-bound with thread before the fabric was dyed—sometimes involving thousands of individual knots on a single kimono.

The result is a subtle, three-dimensional texture that gives the fabric a soft, organic feel. No two shibori patterns are ever exactly alike, making each piece truly one of a kind.

Shibori work is highly valued not only for its intricate beauty but also for the time and craftsmanship it represents. In modern times, this level of handwork has become increasingly rare, adding to the uniqueness and cultural significance of the canvas.

Decoration Advice

This lightweight canvas can be displayed in a variety of ways to suit your space—on a wall, tabletop, or shelf. To hang it, you can use small nails or even two ordinary thumbtacks, thanks to its light construction. It also looks beautiful propped on an easel or leaned against a wall.

Perfect for refreshing your interior, celebrating a housewarming, or gifting to someone special. Each piece is carefully wrapped for safe delivery, making it an ideal gift that’s ready to give right away.

Precaution

All ikasu works are made from authentic vintage and antique kimonos. Due to their age and history, some fabrics may show gentle signs of use, such as minor imperfections or subtle wear.
