About this canvas

A set of three charming kimono canvases is ideal for table decoration.

Period/Story

These canvases have been upcycled from late Showa (1980s) period naga-juban (under-kimono).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

The chrysanthemum pattern on the white canvas holds a special significance as a symbol of longevity. Its Japanese name, "mujina-giku," translates to "raccoon dog chrysanthemum." This name is derived from the chrysanthemum's appearance, with large, overlapping petals resembling the fur of a mujina (raccoon dog). This pattern is highly favored in various plant motif designs and is commonly featured in Edo komon (repeated painted patterns), katazome (traditionally printed patterns), and jimon (woven patterns, like the one represented here).

Furthermore, the fact that this juban (under-kimono) remains in its pure white, undyed state indicates that it was tailored and used for formal occasions. Its pristine white color allows the silk to gleam beautifully when exposed to light, accentuating the distinctive woven patterns.

Combination of white, red and black is typical for weddings in Japan - traditionally bride changes three times - in white, red and black furisode.

Description of fabric characteristics

The naga-juban used underneath the kimono features rinzu silk (satin silk) fabric on a white canvas. Rinzu satin fabric is known for being thinner than crepe silk, and it has a lustrous, soft, and smooth texture. The chrysanthemum pattern on this white canvas, as well as the flower pattern on the red canvas, were meticulously handwoven, highlighting the craftsmanship involved in creating these intricate designs.

Decoration Advice

The canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. You will need tacks or nails to hang it on the wall. Because it is light, you can hang it with two ordinary thumbtacks. You can also lean it against an easel. Perfect for redecorating your room, as a housewarming gift, as a present, or as a souvenir for your loved ones! The product will be carefully wrapped and sent, so it can be used as a gift on the go.

Precaution

All the works are made from real kimonos, antiques and vintages. For this reason, the fabric may have traces of long-term use and minor fabric damages. - In case there are any scratches or stains, we always add a photo of the area on the item page, so please check before purchasing.
