About this canvas

The exquisitely embroidered waves in a gentle millennial pink hue make this kimono canvas a rare and stunning art piece, serving as a remarkable color accent for your interior décor.

Period/Story

This kimono was crafted during the early Showa era, approximately around the 1930s.

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

There are various types of wave patterns in kimono designs. Waves that come and go are often used as symbols of auspicious themes such as eternity, immortality, longevity, and birth. The larger waves, known as the "Tatsunami pattern" or "Aranami pattern," gained popularity during the Edo period (1603-1867). These waves crash repeatedly, reshaping the rocks and altering the land's contours. This pattern is thought to convey a strong determination and a spirit of persistence that refuses to give up and keeps challenging obstacles again and again. It is also believed to symbolize the power of the waves, capable of conquering malevolent forces or demons.

Description of fabric characteristics

Kimonos that incorporate weaving, dyeing, and embroidery to such a degree are indeed a rarity in recent times. The uncomplicated yet elegant composition of the wave pattern with a single-color gradation is a testament to the craftsmanship and refined aesthetics of that era.

Decoration Advice

The canvas can be displayed on a table, etc. You will need tacks or nails to hang it on the wall. Because it is light, you can hang it with two ordinary thumbtacks. You can also lean it against an easel. Perfect for redecorating your room, as a housewarming gift, as a present, or as a souvenir for your loved ones! The product will be carefully wrapped and sent, so it can be used as a gift on the go.
