Story Behind the Work
Sunlit Peaks ~ Longevity ~ is part of ikasu’s textile art collection for boutique hotels, created from carefully selected vintage Japanese kimono textiles.
The foundation of the artwork is a vintage silk kimono featuring a subtle sayagata (紗綾形) jimon woven into the fabric. This traditional geometric pattern has been appreciated in Japan for centuries and is associated with continuity, longevity, and the uninterrupted flow of good fortune.
Over this historic textile, appliqué elements in hishi (菱) diamond shapes have been carefully arranged to create a layered landscape of hills and mountain peaks. Each diamond contains a pine motif, transforming traditional kimono symbolism into a contemporary landscape composition.
The individual elements are connected with kintsugi-inspired gold leaf lines that flow across the artwork like rays of sunlight touching the tops of distant mountains. The golden paths create movement and rhythm while visually uniting the composition into a single harmonious landscape.
The work explores the relationship between endurance and transformation. The evergreen pine, the timeless sayagata pattern, and the renewing light of the sun come together to express resilience, continuity, and hope. Once worn as a kimono, these textiles now continue their story as contemporary textile art designed for modern interiors.
Period
The artwork uses vintage kimono and obi textiles dating approximately from the 1960s–1980s.
Meaning of Patterns and Colors
Sayagata (紗綾形)
The background textile features the traditional Japanese sayagata pattern woven directly into the silk.
Sayagata symbolizes:
- Longevity
- Continuity
- Prosperity
- Interconnectedness
- Endless good fortune
Its uninterrupted geometric flow reflects the idea of blessings and positive energy extending beyond generations.
Pine Motif (Matsu / 松)
The pine motifs within the diamond forms symbolize:
- Longevity
- Resilience
- Endurance
- Steadfastness
- Good fortune
As an evergreen tree that remains vibrant throughout the seasons, pine has long been regarded as one of Japan’s most auspicious symbols.
Hishi (Diamond Shape, 菱)
The hishi motif is traditionally associated with growth, prosperity, and expansion.
Within this composition, the repeated diamond forms become a symbolic mountain landscape, suggesting aspiration, stability, and the gradual achievement of distant goals.
Gold
The gold leaf lines evoke sunlight illuminating the mountain peaks.
Gold traditionally symbolizes:
- Light
- Abundance
- Renewal
- Sacredness
- Transformation
Inspired by the philosophy of kintsugi, the gold does not conceal connections between elements but celebrates them, emphasizing beauty created through continuity and transformation.
About the Material
The artwork combines multiple vintage kimono textiles, each carrying its own history, texture, and craftsmanship.
The background silk features a woven sayagata jimon, a sophisticated textile technique in which the pattern is integrated into the fabric structure rather than printed onto the surface. Depending on the angle of light, the pattern gradually reveals itself, creating subtle depth and movement.
The appliqué embroided elements are cut from vintage obi fabrics featuring traditional pine motifs. Their combination creates a dialogue between material, symbolism, and landscape, transforming historical textiles into a contemporary artistic composition.
