About this canvas

Pines on this kimono canvas are embroidered with gradation, showing how the tree branches are preparing for autumn, gradually changing their color.

Period/Story

The kimono used for this canvas was made and used in late Showa period (probably 50ies to 80ies).

Explanation and meaning of pattern and colors

The "Kasamatsu" pine tree pattern stretches over the white waves. It represents a pine tree growing powerfully on the cliffs of the sea.

Kasamatsu is one of the typical pine tree patterns. The name "kasamatsu" comes from the pine tree's leaves and branches, which spread out horizontally to form a hat-like shape ("kasa" means "hat").

In East Asia, the pine tree is considered a symbol of longevity because of its lush green leaves, even in winter. In Japan, it is also called "evergreen tree" because of its evergreen leaves, and has long been considered a lucky tree. The kadomatsu, a pine tree decoration, which is decorated on the gate of a house at New Year's, is believed to be a symbol of welcoming the gods.

Description of fabric characteristics

The pattern is accented with hand-dyed gold treads and traditional plump Japanese embroidery. Some of the embroidery threads have lost their color due to aging, but this also blends in with the gradation of colors in a good way, creating a sense of seasonal change.

Decoration Advice

The canvas can be displayed on a table, wall, etc. You will need tacks or nails to hang it on the wall. Because it is light, you can hang it with two ordinary thumbtacks. You can also lean it against an easel. Perfect for redecorating your room, as a housewarming gift, as a present, or as a souvenir for your loved ones! The product will be carefully wrapped and sent, so it can be used as a gift on the go.
