Story Behind the Work

Bamboo ~ Renewal ~ is part of ikasu’s textile art collection for boutique hotels, created from carefully selected vintage Japanese kimono textiles.

The artwork is built upon a vintage kimono featuring the traditional tatewaku (立涌) pattern, a flowing motif of rising curved lines that has been admired in Japan for centuries. Historically associated with ascending mist, steam, and life-giving energy, the pattern evokes movement, transformation, and the invisible forces connecting earth and sky.

Across this rhythmic background, hand-embroidered bamboo motifs created using traditional Nihon Shishu (Japanese silk embroidery) appear at different points throughout the composition. Delicate yet resilient, they emerge like living forms within a landscape of flowing energy.

Vertical bands of gold leaf connect the elements, creating pathways of light that travel across the artwork. Inspired by the philosophy of kintsugi, the gold does not divide the composition but unifies it, emphasizing connection, continuity, and transformation. The shimmering gold interacts with changing light throughout the day, bringing subtle movement to the piece.

Together, the rising tatewaku pattern, enduring bamboo motifs, and luminous gold create a meditation on growth, resilience, and renewal. Once part of wearable kimono textiles, these materials have been transformed into contemporary textile art while preserving their cultural history and craftsmanship.

Period

The artwork uses vintage kimono textiles dating approximately from the 1960s–1980s.

Meaning of Patterns and Colors

Tatewaku (立涌)

The background features the traditional Japanese tatewaku pattern.

Tatewaku symbolizes:

  • Rising energy
  • Renewal
  • Transformation
  • Spiritual elevation
  • Positive momentum

Historically interpreted as rising steam or mist, the motif represents invisible forces ascending upward and carrying life forward.

Bamboo (Take, 竹)

The bamboo motifs are executed in traditional Japanese silk embroidery.

Bamboo symbolizes:

  • Resilience
  • Flexibility
  • Integrity
  • Growth
  • Protection

Able to bend without breaking, bamboo has long served as a symbol of strength through adaptability. In Japanese culture, it is considered one of the most auspicious plants and is often associated with prosperity and enduring vitality.

Gold

The gold leaf elements represent light, connection, and transformation.

Gold traditionally symbolizes:

  • Illumination
  • Sacredness
  • Abundance
  • Continuity
  • Renewal

Inspired by kintsugi aesthetics, the gold celebrates connection rather than separation, creating a visual dialogue between individual elements across the composition.

Color Palette

The restrained palette of ivory, soft gold, muted blue, sage green, and warm terracotta reflects the understated elegance of traditional Japanese aesthetics. The subtle colors allow texture, embroidery, and materiality to become the focus of the visual experience.

About the Material

The artwork combines vintage kimono silk with traditional Japanese silk embroidery techniques.

The background textile features a painted tatewaku pattern integrated into the fabric, creating subtle shifts in texture and reflection as light moves across the surface.

The bamboo motifs are rendered in Nihon Shishu, a refined embroidery tradition known for its extraordinary precision, dimensionality, and silk thread luster. Historically used on formal kimono and ceremonial garments, this technique requires extensive craftsmanship and creates a richness that cannot be replicated through printing.

The combination of woven pattern, embroidery, and gold leaf creates layers of texture that gradually reveal themselves through changing light and viewing angles.

Decoration Advice

Hanging on a wall requires picture rails, hooks, tacks, or nails. It may also be displayed on a large easel or architectural shelf.

The panoramic format works especially well above sofas, sideboards, reception desks, beds, and long corridors. The neutral palette and refined materials complement contemporary, Japandi, minimalist, and luxury hospitality interiors.
